The University of Maryland’s National Orchestral Institute + Festival brings together aspiring orchestral musicians from across the country for a month of dynamic music-making and professional exploration. Chosen through a rigorous, cross-country audition process, these young artists present passionate and awe-inspiring performances of adventuresome repertoire at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and in the College Park, MD community.

On the latest Classical Breakdown, John Banther and Evan Keely explore the life of the prolific Baroque composer, Antonio Vivaldi. We all know his name, but what do we really know about the man from 18th-century Venice that composed a wealth of beautiful and virtuosic music still beloved today? Learn about his large output of works, and his incredible work and commitment to the all-girls orphanage, raising some of the finest female virtuosos of the 18th century.

Giordano's Fedora on Opera Matinee
Opera Matinee presents Umberto Giordano's Fedora Saturday at 1PM ET. A 19th century drama, based on a French play of the same name, it is a showcase of verismo -- realism --a story of passion, jealousy and murder. A new Met production conducted by Marco Armiliato, starring Sonya Yoncheva in the title role, and tenor Piotr Beczała.
A feature of local teenage virtuosos on From the Top
We have an extra-special From the Top this week, featuring young virtuosos from the DC area. We hear from the Kim sisters from Herndon, Va who we met on our Instagram Takeover last fall. We also meet a cellist from Burke, Va, a percussionist from Clarksville, MD, and hear an inspiring performance by the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir.
