Rising stars, Mozart's Requiem, and more on WETA Classical this week

Don't miss an exciting performance with two rising stars in music on Front Row Washington, which features a work for flute and cello that imitates a "jet whistle," presented by Dumbarton Concerts. The Balourdet Quartet, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is currently in residence at the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet Program. The quartet received the Grand Prize at the 2021 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, as well as prizes in international competitions including the Banff, Paolo Borciani, and Carl Nielsen competitions. They were also awarded the Gold Medal at the 2020 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the 2021 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. 

Named one of The Washington Post’s 23 for ‘23, flutist and educator Adam W. Sadberry is paving a distinctive career with his citizenry, creativity, and vibrancy both on and off stage. Along with his solo and educational work, Adam has a strong foundation in orchestral playing. He is the principal flutist of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, CA, and has played principal flute with the St. Louis and Detroit Symphony Orchestras, among others.

​Terence Blanchard's second Met premiere, Champion, is the dramatic and triumphant story of young boxer Emile Griffith, who rises from obscurity to world champion.  Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green portrays the young Emile, and veteran Eric Owens portrays Griffith’s older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past.  This performance from earlier this year was a Met premiere, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. On Opera Matinee.

Mozart loved the music of Handel, and learned much from it. On this week's Choral Showcase, Mozart's Requiem, and a work that inspired at least a part of it: the Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline by Handel.
