Nicole Lacroix is the weekday afternoon host on WETA Classical. Her interest in radio was piqued by listening to Voice of America broadcasts in Vientiane, Laos at the beginning of the Vietnam War. The American compound where her family was stationed had no television or telephone, and VOA's announcers provided reassuring news from home. Nicole's father, an enthusiastic if inexpert violinist, contributed to her love of music by raiding the local PX for classical and opera recordings and playing them nonstop on his homemade hi-fi.
When the family was transferred to Côte d'Ivoire, radio was again the vital link that kept them in touch with what was going on in the United States. Through the Cuban missile crisis and the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the neighborhood ham radio operator became the local hero.
Receiving a degree in music from Trinity College, Lacroix spent fifteen years at the former WGMS in Washington, with stints at VOA, KDFC San Francisco and at Baltimore's WJHU and WBJC.
Lacroix lives in the D.C. SW Waterfront with her husband, cat and labradoodle. Hobbies include singing with the Bach in Baltimore choir, yoga, and running with the aforementioned labradoodle.
