Last year, I was pretty excited when NSO In Your Neighborhood came to the area I call home. I felt honored that these wonderful musicians would come to my space and share their artistry with us in some unusual places—a church, a jazz club, a library.
This week, NSO In Your Neighborhood collaborates with communities in DC’s Ward 4 and Takoma Park, Maryland in order to, as they say, “amplify joy, unity, and shared humanity through music and the arts.”
A wide variety of free concerts in many different venues will feature music ranging from Beethoven, Strauss, and Copland to Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and William Grant Still. Jennifer Higdon’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace”, Carlos Simon’s Hellfighters’ Blues and two world premieres commissioned by the Kennedy Center’s Cartography Project will also be highlighted.
Master Classes and in-school programs are an important part of this year’s NSO In Your Neighborhood offerings. It’s a great opportunity to meet NSO performers up close and personal and to show appreciation for the wonderful music they bring to us each week.
